Home to the magnificent Vadakkunnathan Temple and the world-famous Thrissur Pooram (considered the most spectacular festival on earth), this city embodies the soul of Kerala’s ancient traditions.
The Kerala Kalamandalam — Asia’s premier institution for classical arts including Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, and Koodiyattam — is located here. This package combines a cultural tour of Thrissur with a visit to the legendary Guruvayur Elephant Sanctuary (Punnathur Kotta), where over 50 temple elephants are cared for.
Day-wise Itinerary
Arrive at Thrissur. Visit the ancient Vadakkunnathan Temple complex — a brilliant example of Kerala's temple architecture with intricate wooden carvings and murals. Explore the Thrissur Archaeological Museum. Evening at Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi for a traditional Panchavadyam percussion performance.
Early morning darshan at Sri Krishna Temple, Guruvayur — one of the most sacred Vaishnavite temples in India (dress code strictly enforced). Visit Punnathur Kotta — the elephant palace where 50+ temple elephants reside. Watch elephant bathing and feeding rituals. Afternoon visit to Kerala Kalamandalam — see Kathakali and Mohiniyattam students in rehearsal.
Morning drive to Athirapally Falls — Kerala's largest waterfall and nicknamed the "Niagara of India". The Chalakudy River cascades 80 feet over volcanic rock amidst dense Sholayar forest. Short trek to the base of the falls. Visit nearby Vazhachal Falls. Scenic drive through Sholayar Ranges back to Thrissur for departure.
